After reading several replies on "what time of day do you fill up", it got me to thinking, ...

Should you fill up the tank if you only drive in the city? It seems that if you are only driving a short distance anyway, you can save 50 or more pounds ov extra weight. (Fuel weighs app. 6.25 lbs per gallon. Don't put in 8 gallons, you save 50 lbs.) The problem I see is possibly water getting in the fuel through condensation, or extra dirt or other solids blocking the filter. Any thoughts?

I remember back in high school, a friend had a suoped up American Rambler. All us kids would pitch in our lunch money to put in enough gas to get to and from school. It was a blast to ride around in, but we never had enough money to put in more than 1/4 tank or so. Then in 1-2 days, another trip down to the cheapest station in town! Those were fun times!

8-10 gallons at a Tesoro gets you some free filling stickers towards a $5 gas card, so fill it when I can get the stickers.

In my company vehicle I refill at a quarter of a tank, but that's not on my dime. My weekend job is doing courier runs. Sometimes I do in excess of 300miles in a day. While I usually only burn a quarter of a tank for one day of work in the courier position, sometimes I can burn up to a half, so I usually try to keep it full. I see what your saying about the weight of the fuel keeping you down, but think of it this way.

My ranger:
17 gal maximum tank
106.25 LBS of fuel when full.
I weigh in at 120 lbs and commonly carry packages weighing up to 200 lbs in total.

It just wouldn't save me enough mileage to worry about it. Also, sediment deposits that hurt fuel economy, clog filters, and cause wear are more likely to stir up when your below a quarter of a tank.

No. Sad to say that mine is usually between 1/4 & empty. It gets as low as possible w/out me completely running out & having to walk before i put more in. My previous vehicle was mis-judged & ran completely empty numerous times. Hopefully i've learned so that doesn't happen w/ this one.

I fill up when my tank is about empty. Only time I don't is when I find a good deal on gas or am planning on going on a long trip.

No, I do start checking GasBuddy when I get to about 1/2. It's also good to keep the gas tank about 1/2 full during freezing temps. It can help to prevent gasline freeze, as those who live in the cold regions of the US may have experienced.

always, when it drops to 3/4 of a tank, it is time to fill up or get receipt shock. Even if it other every day on high mileage weeks.

Not when prices are falling. I delay fill-ups because gas tomorrow will be cheaper than gas today.
