Boycotts will not work. You're going to have to buy their product eventually. The oil companies have an oligopoly and that means absolute economic control. Games theory shows them that to compete by price just loses them all money. Why do you think their adds are all about "the good folks at..." or about additives.

The only way to change anything is political action. Unfortunately, since they can buy what they need: best lawyers, lobbies, superpacs etc., chances of success are slim to none.

Google historic oil and gas prices and you'll see that when oil peaked at 150/barrel in July 1998 you were paying no more for gas than today when oil has been recently ranging between 102-107. Why? There have been no new refineries built in the USA since before 1990 and now 4 are being shut down. Gas prices are being manipulated by the producers even if you accept the notion that market forces set oil prices. When a few large multinationals are allowed to control (oligopoly) the market for an essential product and use blatant manipulation of the market to artificially jack up prices then it is time for some sort of political action. Unfortunately, given the divisiveness of current U.S. politics the bilateral support for such policies seems to be a pipe dream. However the ground swell of anger may be enough to see politicians try to seize the issue.

Let's make something clear. Or at least clear to me and many other long time Gas Buddy members.

"Buy no gas on" this date or that date, is not a boycott. "Buy no gas on" a certain date is the same as buying your next loaf of bread, while you still have some, a day sooner or a day later than you normally would. If you want to boycott, go ahead, but boycott by taking some action that affects you, such as not using gas on a day you normally would use gas. If you're still driving on your boycott day, what have you done?

Said another way: Not that many years ago, most gas stations were closed on Sundays. They didn't go out of business by not selling gas on Sundays; people simply bought gas on the Saturday before or the Monday after the day the gas station was closed. Relatively few people buy gas on Christmas Day; that's no different than calling for a boycott (your word) by saying "No one should buy gas on Christmas Day". Nothing changed because gas stations didn't sell much gas on Christmas Day.

All that needs to happen, if I was the oil industry and you called a boycott calling us to not buy gas one specific day, is for the gas stations to take a day off, close for the day, and spend time doing things they want.

Sorry, but if you want to make change, you don't use the product. You make a sacrifice and you don't use the product. You tell the oil industry that you refuse to support them, and you're doing something different. But so far it doesn't appear that many people here want to make a sacrifice; it's easier to should "Don't buy gas on one specific day..."

Road4Runner: Boycotts do not work. Unless of course you sing together in harmony after banding together. Anyway don't forget to return and let us know how things went.

You can't boycot EVERY gasoline company, nor do it for a GREAT length of time. Just boycott the non-american companies. But as I've stated before in these forums - you'd be LUCKY if you could get a VILLAGE of people with enough solidarity to accomplish ANY boycott.
