Each year, around 10 million vehicles are disposed of in the United States. Luckily, over 95 percent of these “retired” cars head straight to one of the 7,000 vehicle recycling operations around the country and 75 percent of these cars' parts are completely recycled, letting cars claim top spot as the world's most recycled product.

Because vehicles are made up of many different materials, recycling them isn't a completely straightforward process. Here's what happens to the various parts of your old cars.Click Link To Read Complete Article

The best thing about recycling junkers is it gets Obama bumper stickers off the road.

We need more junk yards for cars. Some after market parts are not as good.

Cars have nearly always been salvaged - recycled.

Green before green because there was green ($$$) to be earned.

I uses to like looking around junk yards, for parts I always needed to keep the old 69 Charger on the road, now they just crush them up.

Of course, nothing goes waste. As the saying goes, someone trash is someone else's treasure.
Also it is good that it is recycled.

Back in the 60's and 70's, we recylced cars at a wrecking yard. Always selling parts from junked cars so other people could use them. Of course, when stripped of all needed parts, we would burn and then crush the car and ship it off to the metal yards in the bay area. Probably started going to China about that time.

So many parts have been recycled over the last decade and it is one of the reasons GM's products have become crap as they use recycled metal that rusts prematurely and plastic that is too brittle and cracks too easily.

About the only Vehicles not stripped of parts before crushed & melted for the Metal are ones so old & damaged that there is not anything left on them worth reusing. I would think the figure was closer to 90% & most the others are sitting in a garage, shed or field somewhere.

So many good little consumers with the need to have the latest toys. My 1991 has 257k. Would have more but have cut back a lot to keep it running as long as possible. Guess that makes me a bad consumer. Proud of it.
