You've seen the price of gasoline lately, and it is far too close to hitting records for comfort. The U.S. average rose to $3.892 yesterday, according to GasBuddy.com data, just 22-cents per gallon off the all time record high in 2008. With prices so high, many vacationers are having to look at closer or cheaper destinations this summer.

Sandy McCune, a stay-at-home mother of three from Kentucky, knows just too well the high price of gasoline means that she's looking at alternate options. "We were looking at going to Disney World in Orlando in June, but with the ridiculous cost of gasoline we're thinking about staying a bit closer to home and planning a vacation somewhere closer," she told me.

Asked if she knew of any fun...

They cannot stop me because I am going away to Florida with my husband and friends. We are splitting the gas and we're flying to Florida for Free because of our miles on our credit cards. We belong to BJ's so we can use our credit card and save up our miles. The rental car is for fee too.

I remember when I was a little kid an old depression era gas station (it was shut down) had a hugh sign on the front window which said: "Gas 12 cents". That was back in 1941. Even then I still remember my dad wishing out loud that gas was still that cheap as the station across the street...that was open....was gouging us for 18 cent/gal for regular. Ethyl was 2 or 3 cents higher but he would buy it and blend it as pure old regular made his V8 1935 Ford rattle and knock. My dad earned about $15 dollars a week and worked 6-10 hour days in that week and felt very happy to get it. When all is said and done, I'd rather have the 4 dollar gas with today's wages.

if you rolled the windows down even slightly, you create drag that reduces mgg.

lots of ppl carry lots of stuff in their cars. Taking that stuff out would also give better mileage.

And the oldie, but goodie... keep tires properly inflated.

as I drove back from a recent trip noted I did not turn on the AC (admittedly it was just a little warm not hot) so I could still get the best gas mileage ... got 52 mpg (in '09 Prius) have done better but that is with more of a downhill trip ...
