Suddenly A Nasty Fight over Subsidies for Nukes in Europe

Testosterone Pit -- France, the UK, Poland, and the Czech Republic, which are all planning or building nuclear power plants, are pressuring the European Union to open up the spigot...

Their goal: get the EU to reclassify nuclear energy as low-emission technology, a heavily subsidized category that includes solar and wind power; it would make nuclear power eligible for the same subsidies. Their argument: Europe's commitment to shift to low-emission power generation by 2050 would have to be “technology neutral.”

If the four countries succeed, the EU could subsidize not only construction of nuclear power plants but also the sale of their electricity to the tune of billions of euros—to be paid by all taxpayers in the EU via the EU budget, 20% of which falls upon German taxpayers. Alas, it’s precisely Germany

Nuclear power works, if you do not build in near the ocean, or on a major tectonic fault line.

Should we be concerned about Germany getting so powerful? The last time they got powerful, they put the whole world in a tizzy..

"low emissive technology"?

Talk to the people in Japan and Russia about " low emissive technology".

Hard to believe they could even consider nuke under this category.

This is crazy. But it is the way the Europeans think. The rest of the world does not think like real Americans.

The EU is going down the toilet with its model of government control and handouts to the politically favored. I wish I could still say the US has a better system.

Wouldn't it be great to have a nuclear powered truck that you would not have to fuel for over 25 years. :)

"As for the safety issue, it is entirely possible to design fail-safe nuclear reactors that shut themselves down if all external power disappears, so that another Fukushima accident could not happen."

This wasn't really the issue at Fukushima. The issue was maintaining the coolant supply. Nuclear power plants can be made very safe, and Japan's reactors are generally considered very safe. After all, Japan invented a lot of the technology! However.... (and it's a big one), they can never be made completely safe, as we're slowly (sadly) beginning to realize. Making a completely safe nuclear power plant would be cost prohibitive and even then it wouldn't actually be completely safe. So, the question remains - do the benefits outweigh the risks. I don't think so. Neither does Germany.

Nuclear power is "lower emission technology". It emits no carbon dioxide or air pollutants. It's waste is contained and controlled (I don't know how Europe deals with nuclear waste, but they get it done).

And nuclear power is the way to lower CO2 emissions and still generate power on a large scale. That is what Europe professes to want, including the Germans who foolishly are giving up nuclear power.

As for the safety issue, it is entirely possible to design fail-safe nuclear reactors that shut themselves down if all external power disappears, so that another Fukushima accident could not happen.

Why isn't nuclear waste classified as an emission? It is pollution that has to be dealt with.

Many years ago, a famous physicist described nuclear power as "a Faustian bargain. That statement is still true.

Since one nuclear power plant on 25 acres can produce the same amount of electricity and enough wind turbines that cover the entire state of Massachusetts, I see no problem.
