EV's only as Clean as the Electricity that Drives them

Oilprice.com -- Electric cars are the cleanest form of transport. Obviously more environmentally friendly than any petrol or diesel cars out there…that’s a given fact…isn’t it?

Well not necessarily. According to a new report by the Union of Concerned Scientists titled ‘State of Charge: Electric Vehicles’ Global Warming Emissions and Fuel Cost Savings Across the United States’, the amount of greenhouse gases released by as a result of charging the battery packs, varies greatly from State to State.

California’s clean energy mix makes the Nissan Leaf an environmental hero, whereas the coal –based electricity in Denver significantly reduces this claim.

The electricity can come from: coal, natural gas, nuclear, hydro or renewable sources. And, these electrical sources do not pollute or emit visible smoke or particles either? Installing solar panels or wind turbines on the roof can help reduce the cost of electricity supplied by the local utility. A site survey of the local installation area will determine if solar panels or wind turbines can be worthwhile. Whatever the size or shape of the vehicle, Produce and ‘Drive’ vehicles with high MPG, are very reliable, have a ‘reasonable’ cost and a good ‘value’ for the money. Consider using other forms of less expensive transportation to lower your cost, if possible! The price of fuel at the pump is too high! 12/22/2012!

Rest of country needs LPG/CNG brought in and adapted like the taxi industry in many developed countries. Often seen in British commonwealth like OZ and N.Z. Solar can't replace anything. The amount of power obtained from solar is minute, compared to the need. Solar roof panels on houses produce less than 20% of the total usage for the house. Coal is popular because it produces a great deal of electricity for a small amount of effort and cost. If we followed your suggestions, we'd all be in the dark.
