PRUDHOE BAY -- A pipeline to a Prudhoe Bay injection well leaked an estimated 3,675 gallons of fluids, mainly a solution of 60 percent methanol and 40 percent water intended to protect the line from freezing, according to the state Department of Environmental Conservation.

The fluids, which also included seawater and small amounts of crude oil, spilled onto a gravel drill pad and into a man-made reserve pit, a report issued Thursday by the department said. Most of it flowed under the snow into the pit.

BP discovered the spill at 3:20 p.m. Tuesday and reported it to DEC at 3:50 p.m., the state report said.

Well 11 used to be an oil production well at Prudhoe but some time back was converted

The oil people are clumsy, uncaring, greedy dickwads. Every drop spilled is a drop that never would have been spilled had they stopped focusing on grubbing money and instead focused on prevention of accidents.

Wonderful. How many environmental and safety rules/protocols did they violate to keep their precious schedule?

Agreed doggod.

"No one was hurt and no fluids got onto the tundra, he said. About an acre was affected, the DEC said.

The pipeline was blocked to stop the spill. BP will remove contaminated snow, ice and gravel, the DEC said."

Much ado about not much.

A total yawner. 3,675 gallons of drilling fluids spilled on a gravel pad at Prudhoe is nothing. Probably make a nice ice-free patch for a while, that's about it.

Woop Dee Doo!

What is 3675 gallons spilled compared to 4 million barrels spilled in the gulf.

Squat my friends, just squat!

What is the big deal, so what if we screw up the environment as long as those at the top make more money that is all that is important...

A leak, is a leak, is a leak.

Drip, drip, drip.

Clean it up and clean it up good.

BP again, as I guess at first guess. This company is one major reason of many why I oppose Keystone XL.

what would have been the consequence if this leak would have been over the Ogallala (planned Keystone) aquifer?

Must be more to this as I see no problems. Guessing this report is an example of small unreported problems the oil and gas industry face all the time. Problems are bound to happen and it seems this one was handled quite well; but, what do I (a retired couch potato) know about anything these days ;)

Spills are bound to happen. The key is to minimize when they do.

It sound like they did the right thing. They reported it immediately. For as much as they drill, there are bound to be leaks and spills from time to time.

Spill caught and contained. Timely reports made.

Are you certain that this "spill" is at a BP site? Just doesn't sound like them.
